Imagine It Phase 6 Final Report
I would like to focus on a deep reflection of what I have done thus far in my Imagine It project. I have faced some challenges and moving forward I want to create a focus that is both creative as well as geared to my students’ needs as well as to their potential growth. I really believe that if we are reflecting on what we do in the classroom it will greatly impact our experiences as educators.
From my book of choice, I learned that there are many obstacles and situations in an urban setting we will continue to face. However, we must take these challenges as a means to become better at what we do and make the necessary changes in order to be successful. By doing so, we are creating a learning environment that will comfort and benefit our students as well. If we are confident and comfortable as teachers, we will show students that we believe in something greater than what exists inside our classroom walls.
What I learned from my focus group and continue to learn from my teaching, is that students are eager to learn and can relate to science. The connections that I see my students make in class and their conversations about the concepts we are focused on, proves that they are becoming more aware of the science that is around us. Also, I see students using content vocabulary and taking learning to new levels. For example, I have a student who is an English Language Learner, who was able to articulate very specific areas of content and vocabulary that we were reviewing. We have been learning about wave energy and sound energy in my class and how waves are formed by using different mediums.
From my colleagues I learned that it is possible to find encouragement and support through our day to day experiences with one another. Also, integrating curriculum is useful in a way that I never realized until I became a STEM fellow. I am able to use so much of what I know in my teaching and although I am not a math or history teacher, I can find these subjects in science and bring that knowledge to my students.
I want to continue to work closely with my students on their thoughts about science. I am also learning so much this year about what is possible in the science world. There are so many areas to study and I want my students to be able to experience it all. I know that I want to focus on my assessments and planning as I move forward. I also want to make my classroom more hands on because this is where I see students really begin to get creative. So as I am reflecting, I am also looking at what can enhance my classroom as well as student learning and creativity.
